They say that when most people make the switch to a healthy lifestyle, they start first by changing the food they eat to organic and unprocessed, and only much later change their hygiene and cleaning products to more healthy ones.
This was true for me as well. I think it was overwhelming to learn about GMO’s and glyphosate, food additives made out of petroleum, and that MSG has a hundred different names on food labels, just to get started navigating the healthy-eating-sphere. It seems that when I learned to avoid one ingredient, the one I switched to that I thought was healthy turned out to be even worse. It was like walking through a mine field.
If I got a headache after eating, or a stomach ache, or an excruciating trip to the bathroom, which bad ingredient had I inadvertently ingested? It was almost a full-time job just trying to figure out what to eat. So, soap and bath products took a back seat–something to deal with later when I had more energy and I had sort-of figured the food thing out.
Then one day, when I mustered up the strength to clean my bathroom, to my dismay, there was a concrete layer of soap scum all the way down the side of the tub. While I was scrubbing and chiseling off the residue, it occurred to me–what was this doing to my skin?
From that day, I made the decision to make better soap choices. I looked for tallow soap, since in my food journey I had stumbled across Weston A. Price, and I was looking to use traditional fats, like my grandparents would have used. I made trips to a few farmer’s markets near me and found only one vendor that sold one type of tallow bar among the many plant-based soaps she offered. It was nice, but I decided to try making my own so I could have a variety of soap and shampoo bars that I felt I needed.
I have noticeable improvement in my skin since then. It’s much softer and hydrated. My husband was able to stop using a dandruff shampoo for his psoriasis that he had been using for ten years (that has a chemical banned in Europe), when he started using a rosemary shampoo bar and spraying his hair with diluted apple cider vinegar after shampooing.
This is why I started Tozzi Soap Company: I hope to use the experience from my arduous health journey to help others conveniently get healthy tallow soap and bath products that they will enjoy using.
